Autumn Winter 2021

Continuing our exploration of 19th century workwear, FW/21 dives deep into the issue of exploited child labor in the United States during the late 19th century. American photographer, Lewis Hine, spent a decade documenting these exploited children. His photographs raised awareness by exposing the ugly condition these children were in and forced to work, with a humanitarian eye. These documentation aid the NCLC's lobbying efforts to end the practice of child labour. The metaphoric title, “Child in the Shell” is a visual and symbolic expression of a child wearing oversized and unsuitable workwear covering their longing for the innocence of childhood.
